Spiritually Integrated Therapy

To choose spiritually integrated therapy is to say that matters of spirituality or religion are important to you, in positive or negative ways, and you want to be able to talk about it in your therapy, whatever your primary reason for being in therapy may be.

Do you see yourself in any of the following?

  • I want to explore and expand the spiritual dimension of my experiences to find more meaning and resilience in life.

  • I’m spiritual but not religious. I don’t find much meaning or vitality from any religious institution and yet I feel there’s a gap in my life. I still have a sense of something sacred or divine and want to know it better and integrate it into my life.

  • I suffer from my past involvement in a religious tradition. It has left me feeling uncertain and bad about myself, and in conflict with people who are important to me. I want to understand and disentangle myself from this part of my past.

  • My spiritual or religious involvement is very important to me and I want a therapist who will take this seriously and make it a part of my therapeutic work without necessarily being a member of my faith tradition.

Lots of people therapy are also grappling with matters of spirituality as part of their life.

Many find their way to a deepened spirituality – however they understand it – but often this occurs outside the realm of therapy.

When spiritual and religious concerns are central to one’s well-being, they can be the foundation of vitality, identity, meaning, and values in life.

Conversely, they can also be at the heart of one’s most profound inner struggles.

I can work effectively with you to integrate spiritual/religious matters into our therapeutic work.

If it is your wish to explore or develop this part of your life, we will focus on your individual experience and life context. Many therapists steer clear of spiritual matters in their clients’ lives, as though they are not appropriate to the process of therapy.

Other therapists are explicitly religious, offering pastoral care or religious counseling. My approach is spiritually sensitive but entirely non-sectarian and non-doctrinaire.

I’ve worked in depth and successfully with many clients to integrate spiritual matters into therapy, and I am well educated (Ph.D., University of Chicago) on the intersections of religion and psychology, and am closely familiar with many different traditions and spiritual issues, East and West.

You can choose a spiritually integrated therapy

Choosing to reach out for help through therapy can feel very difficult, I understand this, but please know that a transformative therapeutic experience touches upon the innermost and essential realms of your experience.

If these inner realms include religious or spiritual life, we can fruitfully integrate and explore them together.
